Program description: the Chinese Language Program (including Business Chinese) at the School of Overseas Education is a special undergraduate program specifically designed for international students with different social and cultural backgrounds and with a high school diploma or higher.

The School develops teaching plans, and sets curriculum and practice courses in accordance with the requirements and regulations of the Ministry of Education and the University on undergraduate education. Available with almost 80 courses, the undergraduate program features a complete system of courses and disciplines, including:

1. Chinese language courses, including courses on Chinese language skills (consisting of comprehensive skills courses and know-how courses, i.e. listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation) as well as courses on Chinese language knowledge (phonetics, Chinese characters, vocabulary, grammar and rhetoric);

2. Chinese humanistic knowledge courses, including Overview of China, Chinese Contemporary Topics, Chinese History, Geography, Economy, Philosophy, Religion, Cultural History, Literary History, Chinese and Foreign Current Events, Chinese Character Calligraphy, as well as courses with local characteristics such as Sichuan Dialect, Folklore and Tourism Culture of Sichuan and Chinese Minority Arts;

3. Other courses, including Sports, Chinese Computer Editing, Second Foreign Languages (currently German, French, Korean, Dutch, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, etc, are available), and special lectures, etc.;

4. Practice courses, including field visits to language internship bases, language internship week activities, and writing of bachelor’s degree thesis.

Admission time: an academic year consists of two semesters, spring and fall, with the semester schedule varying slightly from year to year depending on the time of the Chinese Spring Festival. The fall semester begins in late August or early September each year and ends in mid-to-late January of the following year; while the spring semester begins in late February or early March each year and ends in mid-July of that year.

Academic program: four years, which can be completed in three to six years.

Professional Training Objectives:

1. Have a solid proficiency in Chinese language and verbal communication skills;

2. Master systematic fundamental theories and knowledge of Chinese language;

3. Acquire basic knowledge of the Chinese humanities and get acquainted with the Chinese national conditions and Chinese culture;

4. Master the basic approaches of literature search and data inquiry, and acquire the preliminary capabilities to perform scientific research and practical work in Chinese.

Requirements for graduation: 1. Total credits required: 160; 2. Qualified for HSK Level 5; 3. Having been awarded the credits for “Language Practice”; 4. Having passed the graduation thesis defense.
